“5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;  apart from me there is no God.  I will strengthen you, though you have no acknowledged me, 6 so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me.  I am the Lord, and there is no other.”

Isaiah 45:5-6

“And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of Him!  Who then can understand the thunder of His power?” Job 26:14

Tempted and tried, I wondered why
The good man died, the bad man thrives
And Jesus cries because He loves ‘em both
We’re all cast-aways in the need of rope
“Farther Along” - Josh Garrels

“1 Hear, O Israel.  You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.  2 The people are strong and tall-Anakites!  You know about them and have heard it said: ‘Who can stand up against eh Anakites?’ 3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire.  He will destroy them;  he will subdue them before you.  And you willd rive them out and annihiliate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.” Deuteronomy 9:1-3

The Old Testament is so good.  It makes me so sad that it sometimes gets neglected.

“10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.  11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws, and his decrees that I am giving you this day.  12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.  15 He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions.  He brought you water out fo hard rock.  16 He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you.  17 You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’  18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.” Deuteronomy 8:10-18

“12 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.  13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.  On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, not your manservant or maidservant, nor your ok, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do.  15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.  Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.” Deuteronomy 5:12-15

I always ignore that this is one of the ten commandments.  Why?

“12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.”  Psalm 37:12-13

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.  9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”  10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”  Genesis 3:8-10

Anyone who knows God well enough will never hide from Him.  When we know Him, we know that every single time we return to Him begging for forgiveness, He will always respond with love and give it.  There is no reason for us to fear God’s judgement.  1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”  We don’t have to run from God and hide our sin because we know that “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” 1 John 1:9.  Let us not respond like Adam, seeking to hide our sin and running from a punishment that has already been poured out on the one who bore it on the cross.  That punishment is already spent.  The only thing our Father has left to give us is LOVE.

Living to prove He is more precious than life.
John Piper

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Dang. Christian is dropping bombs right now.

“Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” Romans 14:4-8

Oh Lord help me live this.

“Unless I am convicted by the testimony of Scripture or by evident reason - for I trust neither in popes nor in councils alone, since it is obvious that they have often erred and contradicted themselves - I am convicted by the Scripture which I have mentioned and my conscience is captive by the Word of God.  Therefore I cannot and will not recant, since it is difficult, unprofitable and dangerous indeed to do anything against one’s conscience.  God help me.  Amen.” -Martin Luther

The more I learn about Martin Luther, the more amazed I am at the man he was.  He started the whole Reformation without even wanting to.  His conscience was simply held captive by the Word of God and he was just remaining faithful to that.  If we remain faithful to God, He uses us to accomplish amazing things.  Incredible.

2 And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heave, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5:2-11

“The kingdom is both a journey and a destination, both a rescue operation in this broken world and a perfect outcome in the new earth to come, both already started and not yet finished…The church needs more “violent” men and women who take the kingdom of heaven by force. The church is in need of men and women who have been captivated by faith in Jesus to pursue him passionately and vehemently, doing whatever it takes to live the life of faith required by the radical message of the kingdom and to share that message of hope and healing with others…Jesus ushered in God’s kingdom, not through retaliation or force, but through a way of preaching and living that was at once peaceful and relentless.” -Mark Driscoll on Matthew 11:12
